I feel your whole understanding of bikes lanes is completely out of touch with the reality of the situation. The fact is there is limited space on Wigan roads, in fact more pavement areas and shared bikes lanes with pedestrians are needed. Pushing cyclists into heavy traffic and making them wear helmets is ridiculous, insulting and dangerous. Your ignorance is truly the problem with regards to this issue. Once again, instead of taking helpful progressive steps to help the infrastructure : such as paving/tarmacking country lanes and making those open to foot and cyclists, take reductive and nihilistic steps to degenerate the problem even further and make cycling even less enjoyable with mandatory helmets. This reminds me of the speed bumps/cameras issue. Instead of helping the problems by increasing the roads, you slow down and go against progress and a genuine commitment to infra-structure development. The BEST WAY is to increase and clear and pave the many footpaths, bridle ways and dirt tracks in Wigan are and make them into a usable part of the infra-structure. Wigan is now doing an EXCELLENT job of starting to address the issue of cycling in the borough and you are simple ill informed, regressive and potentially creating deaths by your ignorance. STOP MEDDLING WITH SOLUTIONS AND START TO SOLVE BIGGER PROBLEMS. YOU NEED TO LEAVE CYCLE PATHS AS THEY ARE AND PAVE THE ROCKY, MUDDY (IN WINTER) AND UGLY PATHS, IN ROADS ETC.....This is UTTERLY RIDICULOUS to spend tax payer money solving a problems and then later, for lack of any innovation, removing the solution. STOP WASTING TIME AND MONEY AND ACTUALLY MAKE A REAL AND LASTING DIFFERENCE GARY !!
A lot of people use footpaths but cannot in Spring/Autum/Winter because they are full of holes, rocks and mud. Putting sand or dirt does not function as a solution. They need PAVING and made into shared cycleways, bridleways and footpaths. The same goes for the canal banks. I doubt you will address this or do anything to REALLY help the situation. Instead you will address areas that are obvious, for publicity, while ignoring any real solution. Once people like you stop trying to micor manage the individuals and turn your mind to serious development of the town, the less we will see of this LUDICROUS, EXPENSIVE AND FUTILE situation where progressive infrastructure solutions are made then reversed. Make a difference. Keep the lanes. Pave the ugly dirty muddy paths for cyclists and pedestrians alike. Shared cycle lanes work well in London, Berlin, Holland and Wigan is no different in it's needs. The only difference is the short-sightedness of our development strategies.

Hi Debbie,
Thank you for your posting:
Sadly the Council have supported Drive safe who manage the camera.
They have stated that there is a hard standing on the grass suitable for this activity!
I have requested they place a more permanent camera instead of the mobile camera, but up to now this request has fell on deaf ear.
