Hi Gary
Wigan council seems to be showing the way with independent councilors (and Bryn in particular).

We may soon, even without an election reach the stage where the independents are the secod largest group on the council.

How will they then operate bearing in mind they are Independent?

Alan

You have done so much in a short space of time. The time is right for you to take the next step, you should stand as a INDEPENDENT candidate at the next ellection for MP for Ashton and Makerfield. It is time for change and that time is now. I for one would support you as a lot of other people would to. There is to much sleeze in politics today and we want somebody that acts for the people and notfor there own interests or that of a big party.

It is important that all of you build upon what you have done as independents, you are all an insparation. See what can be done with hard work and an organised and targeted campaign not just a win by a few votes but by large margins. You have the spring board to go further and achieve even more.I look forward to more and bigger victory's.

Please Note.

I have removed the Blog on the 6th May after it was pointed out to me that my use of the word caution could be misconstrued.
This was not intended to imply that Nigel Ash had received a formal police caution.
I should have been more explicit when using the contents of a Crown Prosecution Service letter which stated "I shall write to the police asking that Mr. Ash and ******* be provided with suitable advice as to ensure the factual accuracy of statements made in their election literature".
I am sorry if anyone feels that they have been misled by my use of the word caution instead of warning or advice, as there was no intention on my part to mislead.

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS,to Don, Brian and yourself. I think that one of the messages that came from the victory loud and clear was that the name 'Independent' never was second best to CAP,and that the party was truly elected for the quality, once again of the candidate, and what the electorate knows has been done for their area.

I hope that the party now chooses with great care good candidates to contest other wards, when the party could become a very credible opposition in chambers!

I also might add, that I was impressed, on the night by the the way in which Don and Helen Ash represented themselves. This was a good night to be involved in the political system. I think that when it works, it works well.
Fantastic result to you all!

We are supposed to have a department that deals with culture?

Yet the most famous artist from Wigan Theodore Major is exhibited in Oldham.
Isn't it about time Wigan honoured one of its most talented sons.

Or are they still behaving like spoilt children because he dared to critisise them?

Hi Gary
I have read in the local paper that Conservative Leader Michael Winstanley, has said that council employee's should pay parking charges, like the rest of the people who work in Wigan town centre.
This seems a risky and maybe brave political stance to take, as it may lose votes from that sector.
As an Independent beholden only to the people of your ward, what are your views?

Alan

Hi Alan,
Well most NHS Hospitals have been charging staff to park their vehicles on site for at least 15 years now, it was a very unpopular decision at the time, but as time has gone by, most staff have excepted this charge or (stealth tax) imposed on them by their employer.
Employees on Wigan Council should either consider coming to work by public transport or accept that they will have to pay for parking their vehicle at work, just like Jo Blogs does when shopping in Wigan.
I agree with Councillor Winstanley 100%.
For the record, we both work for the NHS.
Thanks for your posting Alan.
Regards
Gary

For what it's worth, I think that council staff should be able to park for free (and no, I don't work for the council or any other public body!)

The fact is that most council workers are poorly paid, I reckon around £16k a year is about right.

This is because most of them are back office staff and are earning nothing like the £100,000-plus salaries of their bosses. There's this myth (put around by politicians mostly) that everyone working in the public sector is bleeding the public dry and it just isn't the case.

Dear Observer,
If the Council start charging staff for the privilage to park at work then its only fair that they charge local councillors also.
I pay Aprox £1.50 a week ,to park at Wrightington Hospital, I would expect a simular charge for all Council workers on a pay level up to £25k PA.
If you earn more you pay more.
Thanks for your posting.

Hi Gary & Obsever
Surely free parking in a town centre location is classed as a benefit in kind?
Alan

Comment from Observer

Alan,
I don't disagree that town centre parking isn't a benefit in kind, but all I'm saying is we really need to put a touch of realism into the debate.

Imagine if the following happened: Wigan MBC scrapped all free parking for staff, who then in turn decided that the cost of parking in the town centre wouldn't make the job worth it financially, so they then decide to leave (net result: high turnover of staff).
If that happened to be the case, the council may then start finding it difficult to recruit workers at its town centre offices without the lure of free parking to offset to rubbish wages they get. So the bosses then decide it may be best if the council moved lock stock and barrel out of Wigan town centre (keeping the town hall going of course for its civic significance) and moving to some business park in the middle of nowhere which has free parking and more office space at a cheap rent - but probably with lousy access unless you have a car.
So we'd have a council whose offices were inaccessable to the many just because some councillor thought the authority should cut back on parking fees (less than 1% of the authority's budget I believe).

I realise this is a lot of ifs, buts and maybes but let's face it, it's not beyond the realms of possiblity
